I love my job, because I am grateful to be able to help my patients improve their health and their quality of life. Over the years many of my patients have brought their families and friends to see me, and some of them have become friends.

Why do people choose Chinese medicine?

Chinese medicine has at least 3,000 years of history. It is the oldest medical system in the world, and it has gained recognition across the globe over the last century. In more and more western countries, medical scientists have set out to study it. When the World Health Assembly adopted the eleventh revision of the International Classification of Diseases, the ICD included details of traditional Chinese medicine for the first time. That reference work categorises thousands of diseases and diagnoses and sets the medical agenda in over a hundred countries.

Why has it lasted, and why is it growing?

Because patients find it effective. There are problems that western medicine has not found a way to treat. In other cases it can address the symptoms without reaching the root cause, so a patient may face taking synthetic medicines for life. Some problems are not recognised by western medicine at all, so no treatment is offered for them — feeling cold even in summer, or sweating persistently at night. And some patients simply cannot tolerate western medicines because of the side effects.

The philosophy behind it

Chinese medicine holds that good health is the body's natural state. For that state to hold, the balance of yin and yang has to be maintained, and Qi — energy, or life force — has to be sufficient and moving freely.

Think of the body as a car. The heart is the engine, the liver is the gearbox. But a car needs fuel to run, and every organ in the body needs Qi in the same way. Yin and yang are two opposing, complementary forces: yin is night, dark, cold, damp, quiet, below, water, earth, passive; yang is day, bright, heat, dryness, fire, above, heaven, active. A car has four wheels and they must be balanced for it to run smoothly — a flat tyre and the car loses its balance. When the body's yin and yang fall out of balance, illness follows.

Treatment aims to rebalance yin and yang, strengthen Qi, and clear obstructions so that energy flows. That is why Chinese medicine can recognise and treat so many different problems with very few side effects: it works with the body's natural state rather than against it.
